Build Business Credit
the Right Way.
Most business owners don't know their business has its own credit profile — completely separate from their personal credit. This guide walks you through exactly how business credit works, what to do first, and how to get to $50K–$250K in EIN-only funding.
Business credit and personal credit are completely separate files. Building business credit the right way means lenders evaluate your EIN — not your SSN. No personal guarantee. No personal liability.
Before You Apply for Anything
The 6 Foundation Requirements
Skipping or rushing through these is the single biggest mistake business owners make. Lenders and bureaus will verify every one of these before they extend credit. Get them right before you open a single account.
Legal Business Entity
Your business must be registered as an LLC, S-Corp, or C-Corp. Sole proprietorships don't qualify for business credit — the lender sees you, not a business.
Skipping this step means everything else you build is on sand.
Employer Identification Number (EIN)
Your EIN is your business's Social Security Number. Every credit account, every vendor relationship, and every lender will require it. Get it from the IRS — it's free.
Dedicated Business Address
A registered business address (not a P.O. Box, not your home address) that matches your Secretary of State filing exactly. Lenders cross-reference this.
Mismatched addresses are the #1 reason business credit applications stall.
Business Phone Listed in 411
A business phone number — separate from your personal cell — registered and listed in 411. Lenders verify this. If it doesn't appear, your file is immediately suspect.
Business Checking Account
A dedicated business bank account in your business's legal name. Commingling personal and business finances is an automatic red flag for underwriters.
D&B Profile (DUNS Number)
Dun & Bradstreet is the primary business credit bureau. Your DUNS number is your business credit identity. Without it, you have no Paydex score — and no Paydex means no vendor accounts.
This is the most overlooked step. Most business owners have never heard of it.
The Roadmap
Tier 1 → Tier 4:
The Business Credit System
Business credit is built in tiers. Each tier unlocks the next. You cannot skip ahead — lenders and bureaus check for established history before extending higher credit lines.
The first tradelines you open. These vendors extend net-30 or net-60 terms with no personal guarantee and no credit check — and they report to D&B. Examples: Uline, Quill, Grainger.
Outcome
Establishes your Paydex score and creates your first business credit history.
Requirement
Entity setup complete. DUNS number registered.
Store credit and revolving accounts that require established Tier 1 history. Moderate limits. Report to multiple business bureaus. Examples: Home Depot Business, Staples Business, BP Fleet Card.
Outcome
Paydex 80+. Business credit profile becomes active and verified.
Requirement
3+ Tier 1 accounts reporting for 60+ days.
Fleet cards, gas cards, and higher-limit business cards that require established Tier 2 reporting history. No SSN required. Examples: WEX Fleet, Shell Business, Visa Business (community bank).
Outcome
$5K–$25K credit lines. No personal guarantee required.
Requirement
Paydex 80+. 3+ Tier 2 accounts active.
High-limit bank lines of credit, SBA financing, and corporate cards. This is the goal — lender-ready business credit with no personal liability. Examples: Chase Ink Business, Amex Business Gold, SBA 7(a).
Outcome
$50K–$250K+ funding. EIN only. The business operates on its own financial identity.
Requirement
Strong Tier 1–3 history. Multiple bureaus reporting.
What Kills Files
5 Mistakes That Set
You Back 6 Months
Using a personal credit card for business expenses
You're building YOUR credit, not your business's credit. The accounts need to be in the business name with the EIN.
Opening all your accounts at once
Lenders flag rapid account openings as a risk signal. The tier system exists for a reason — sequence matters.
Using mismatched business information across applications
Your name, address, and phone number must be identical on every account, your state filing, and your 411 listing. One mismatch freezes everything.
Skipping D&B registration
Without a DUNS number, vendor accounts can't report your payment history. You're paying bills no one is recording.
Giving up after Tier 1
Tier 1 accounts alone will never get you to $50K+ funding. Most business owners stop too early. The funding is in Tier 4 — you have to build through.
